The exhaust system serves two vital functions—Removing dangerous engine gases and reducing engine noise.
A loud exhaust system could get you a traffic ticket. Most cities will cite a driver for a vehicle that makes excessive noise. Then you’ll have to pay the ticket and get your exhaust fixed anyway. More importantly, even though you might not mind the noise, be sure there are no exhaust gas leaks. Engine exhaust contains, among other things, carbon monoxide, which can be deadly if inhaled.
Be sure to check for worn hangers. A muffler left banging around will not last long. Always have defective or missing muffler clamps replaced. It’s worth the small price to avoid purchasing a new exhaust system because yours is laying on a railroad crossing somewhere.
