Transmissions

Your vehicle’s transmission is both one of the most complex, and most important components there is. Its full of hundreds of parts including little gears, springs, seals, and so forth…and failure of about any one of these could cause your transmission (and your vehicle) to not perform correctly—if at all.

Your transmission’s main job is to providing power to the wheels. This mission is complicated by the fact that your wheels need to turn at various speeds, within a fairly wide range, while your engine needs to stay at a constant speed, within a fairly narrow range—no matter how fast your wheels want to spin. An automatic transmission locks and unlocks different sets of gears to the output shaft to achieve the various gear ratios.

Because of a transmission’s complexity, the need for special tools, and the fact that its usually located in the middle of your car, (that’s part of what’s under that hump in the floor that runs between the driver’s and passenger sides of of your car) transmission work isn’t something left to the neighbor’s kid out in the dirveway.
